A WORK CAMP IS COMING TO TOWN!

Philipsburg has the unique opportunity to host 350 high school students and their leaders in our town on June 11-17.  These students are part of a Group Work Camp, which comes to towns to do light maintenance, painting, and projects in homes of the area.  Sixty homes will be aided in this effort!  The Work Camp was made possible through the request of Community Action, who is the local organization hosting the event.

What does all of this have to do with our church?  How about the way it takes care of those in need?  How about the way it offers a mission experience to high school students, who PAY $400 each to come?  How about the way it gives us a chance to host virtual strangers?  How about the way it gives our town an opportunity to partner together for good, meaningful work?

This Work Camp is being undertaken as a project by our Deacons, to take part in offering hospitality to those who are coming.  In the next months, there may well be an opportunity to bake your best cookies or drop off a pack of sodas or scoop up some ice cream for these students.  Our local Dairy Queen has already donated 360 Dilly Bars!  The camp might need to borrow some ladders.  They will be parking in our new lot all week long, since the Jr. High can’t accommodate the anticipated 80 or so vehicles needed to bring all those folks here.  If you have a pool in your home, a youth group might enjoy a dip on Wednesday, June 14, when they have their one free afternoon of the week.  Our Deacons are selling Marianna Hoagies to set up a “$1,000 Challenge” to any other church in Philipsburg or Osceola to help raise the $11,000 still needed to fund the supplies for the work.  Plan to buy some for your dinner on Wednesday, February 15, or lunch on February 16!

When all is said and done, our ministry as a church involves us in our community.  This Work Camp is a great place to shine our light!

Grace and Peace,

PER CAPITA

Each year, as part of our denominational

responsibility, the church is asked to pay

a certain amount for each active member.

This amount is decided based on denominational

needs and is voted on by Presbytery.  It is what helps to pay for Presbytery and national ministries and expenses.  For 2005, the denominational support for our church is $24.67 per active member.  While the church is prepared to pay this amount, you are welcome to contribute your family’s portion in the enclosed per capita envelope.  The family portion is only necessary for active members.  Baptized children are not assessed, but youth who are confirmed are considered active members.  Thus, a family of 4 with two confirmed youth could offer $98.68, or 4 times $24.67.  Or, you could keep it all round and make it an even $100!

WORSHIP LITURGIST INVITATION

Leading in worship is not limited to officers of the church.  If you would

like to share in this ministry, please contact Pastor Tracie.  We love to

have people sharing their gifts in worship!

                                                                                                                MONTHLY THANKS

Many in the congregation have given of

their time and gifts to enhance the ministry of the church again in January.  To the kind soul who took down all those lovely Christmas decorations, and who doesn’t like public recognition … Thanks!

To Jennifer Johnston, who took on the added work of the Annual Report … Thanks!  The Presbyterian Women fed the masses at the Annual Meeting with loving care … Thanks!  Jerilin Pritchard continues to confidentially keep track of our Misconduct Policy paperwork … Thanks!  Colt Viehdorfer stepped in to play for Sally during Ned Holdren’s funeral … Thanks!  Shirley Turner and Theresa Martha faithfully greet at the Main door … Thanks!

ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS THANKS

The report is in from the Alternative Christmas project – done for the first time this year!  This congregation generously supported the Faith Presbyterian Church “Share Your Seat” ministry with $1,520 in chairs, plus another $1,480 in independent donations!  For The Heights at Windy Hill Presbyterian Home, you gave $625, which will be used for window dressings in the new Personal Care facility.  For Krislund Camp, you gave $331.10 for their 2005 needs list.  Your total Alternative Christmas giving was $2,476.10, with another $1,480 for chairs!  That’s $4,000 in gifts in just 6 weeks!  Thank you, congregation, for your support.  Thank you, Alternative Christmas team, led by Carol Moore!

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

February 5 is the big day for Pittsburgh Steeler fans, and it’s an even BIGGER day to take a bite out of hunger!  Millions of dollars are raised each year by youth groups all over the world to support hunger causes.  Our youth will be collecting CANS of food or DOLLARS at the door on Sunday, February 5, to give to the Community Action Food Bank.

AGAPE MEAL

In keeping with the

tradition of beginning

Lent together on Ash Wednesday,

the Session will be hosting an Agape

Meal on Wednesday, March 1, at 6 PM in

Westminster Hall.  This year, the meal is offered

as a gift from your Elders – inviting you to start Lent

peacefully by having no dinner to cook or dish to bring.

Please make time in your schedule to begin this season with

our faith community.  A short service with communion will follow

our meal together.  Since you need not bring anything, why not begin

Lent with this simple reminder of God’s many gifts to you?  This is a wonderful

way to mark Jesus’ journey to the cross, and to invite others to explore the fellowship of our church.

RELAY FOR LIFE UPDATE

Due to the Work Camp opportunity for this year, and the date conflicts of June 17-18 for both the Work Camp and

Relay for Life, the Deacons have voted to not have a Relay for Life Team from our Church for this year only.  With this decision, you are strongly encouraged to support other teams with your financial gifts, volunteering and walking energy.  Also, please plan to attend the Relay for Life booths on Saturday, June 18, to show our solidarity for the courageous men and women who battle cancer.
